Our blog celebrates people working together to make a positive difference.
If you have followed our blog, Facebook or Twitter for a while, than you have probably noticed that we here at OCLI are very passionate about making a positive difference in both our local community and the world around us. Whether we are going out in our local towns and neighborhoods to help create change in-person, or we are simply spreading awareness in our office and on our social media pages, we always try our best to help those less fortunate in any way that we can.
Therefore, you can only imagine our excitement when we learned that this 2012’s Blog Action Day theme was “The Power Of We.” The idea of Blog Action Day was first created in 2007 as a way to bring together bloggers from different countries, interests and languages to blog about one important global topic on the same day. Past topics have included water, climate change, poverty and food with thousands of blogs, big and small, taking part.
However, this year is specifically about highlighting the causes that make a difference in our own communities and lives, or to profile a group that inspires you by the way they have made a positive influence. Naturally, with all of the amazing organizations and events that OCLI participates in each year, it was difficult for us to choose just one of our causes to focus on for this beneficial event. Therefore, we have put together some information about just a few of the causes that mean the most of us and how we have worked with them in the past in order to help make a positive difference.
Vision Harvest
One of the largest events that we here at OCLI participate in year after year is the annual Vision Harvest event in New Jersey. During this important event, Dr. Silverman, along with other physicians in the area, offer free cataract surgery procedures for people who are uninsured and do not have the financial resources to undergo this life-changing procedure. Each year, participating eye physicians will be evaluate prospective cataract patients and schedule them for their free procedure. Eligible patients will have all eye examinations, testing, medications, and surgery provided to them free of charge.
Community Food Bank of New Jersey
Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays of the year and we believe that no family should go without food during this holiday season. Therefore, we teamed up with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey last year to help fight hunger and poverty by distributing food and providing education and training, and developing new programs to help people with low incomes meet their basic needs. OCLI also matched each donation made through our website and extended a $500 discount towards LASIK for all who donated.
Americares.org
In the aftermath of the horrific Japanese tsunami in 2011, Dr. Silverman issued a call to all friends, family at patients of the OCLI office to donate to the Americares.org website―an amazing website is a set up for survivors and a nonprofit international disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization. Dr. Silverman asked: “We need every local corporate executive to make a financial gift to the Japanese people, and to ask their employees to contribute. I’m also inviting our patients to donate $50; when they do, we’ve decided to discount LASIK services–$500 off the top.”
While each of these communities and organizations are near and dear to our hearts, we also encourage our readers to research and explore the many other amazing causes that are being talked about during 2012’s Blog Action Day.
