Simply put, inspirational quotes help us to see the beauty in the world. That warm feeling you get when you succeed in deciphering a code can also make you feel on top of the world. So, what happens when we mix the two together? Magic. Yes, we love to show our patients that there is a certain type of magic to being able to see, and you can feel that warmth and magic in this quote above. It’s a fascinating method of spreading good feelings through our patients and peers, and we enjoy every bit of it.
But let’s be honest, most eye charts are only there for functionality. Ever since they were developed in the 1860’s by Dutch eye doctor Herman Snellen, eye charts have always been created for the sole purpose of measuring eye acuity. The famous eye chart (although not as exciting as the one above but serves an important function) looks like this:
Usually, when tested by an eye doctor, this eye chart will be placed 20 feet in front of the patient. Eye doctors could also make the chart appear 20 feet away through the use of mirrors and visual imagery. If you are able to read the letters, then it tells the doctor that you have 20/20 vision, meaning you are able to read a letter 20 feet away; something that people should be able to do with normal eyesight. However, if you are only able to read the letter at the top and nothing else, this means that your vision is at 20/200, meaning that you can read a letter at 20 feet that most people with normal vision can read at 200 feet. In other words, at this level your vision extremely poor, and is referred to as “legally blind”.
Now for a bit more detailed information on eye charts so you can impress your eye doctor with your knowledge. First off, there is only one type of letterform used in an eye chart. These letterforms are called optotypes and there are several versions of them worldwide. Why is there only one distinct letterform used? Well, that’s because our vision must be regulated worldwide so as to accurately determine essentially what type of personal eye care we need!
With that in mind, isn’t it more fun to have the inspirational eye chart quote above printed out in your room? You can test out your eye vision while making yourself feel so much better each day!
