Sports Eye Safety Month & Women’s Eye Health
April is here and spring is in the air. For this month, we observe Sports Eye Safety Month and Women’s Eye Health Month.
Sports Eye Safety Month
Sports Eye Safety Month is a time to raise awareness on how children and adults can protect their eye health during recreational activities. Over 40,000 athletes suffer a preventable eye injury each year; eye related injuries due to sports is the leading factor in blindness among children. Although it isn’t a rule for sports to require special protection, it’s a necessity for those who wear glasses to wear protective eyewear while playing sports, plus it’s suggested for those who don’t require glasses in order to prevent any future eye injuries.
The material the lenses in safety glasses and googles are made from is ultra-strong polycarbonate, a much more durable material than other plastics, so it can take a beating and hold up during any sport. Plus, the lenses protect from ultraviolet rays while you’re playing outside so there’s no need to worry about the sun. Frames come in various forms so they can be worn with or without a helmet.
Since children are still growing, sports googles are made to be flexible so they can still protect as your child grows; eventually you may have to invest in a new pair if the frames becomes too uncomfortable.
Women’s Eye Health Month
As we mentioned before, Women’s Eye Health Month is also in April, so along with spreading awareness about Sports Eye Safety Month, we also raise awareness of eye related topics for women. Did you know women are more likely to lose their vision to eye disease them men? 2/3 of all blindness and visual impairment occurs in women. Here are some more statistics on the vision health of women:
- Like it was just mentioned, 2/3 of blindness and visual impairment occurs in women, but 3/4 of visual impairment can be corrected or prevented.
- Women are more likely to suffer from eye related problems due to the fact that they outlive men on average.
- In the U.S. alone there are about 1 million people who suffer from blindness and making up 70% of that 1 million are women.
- It isn’t certain yet, but women may suffer from more eye related diseases due to hormonal or immunological reasons.
- Poor environmental conditions and smoking are leading factors in developing eye diseases and impairment.
Keep eye safety in your mind, no matter what you’re doing. If you haven’t had an eye exam yet this year, consider scheduling an appointment with one of us at EyeCare 2020.
