Combine Glaukos iStent® Implantation and Cataract Surgery for Optimal Glaucoma Treatment

April 4, 2019

An international study has confirmed that Glaukos iStent® Implantation in Combination with Cataract Surgery has been confirmed as safe and effective in treating Glaucoma.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. The damage is usually caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. There are two main types of glaucoma: Open-angle glaucoma and Angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type in which the structure of the eye appears normal yet does not allow the fluid in it to drain prperly. Angle-closure glaucoma is when the fluid within the eye can no longer drain properly since the space between your iris and cornea become too narrow for it to do so, resulting in buildup in the eye.

Symptoms

Depending on the type of glaucoma, symptoms may vary. With open-angle glaucoma there often are no symptoms but vision is nonetheless being slowly compromised. Angle-closure glaucoma is rare but considered a medical emergency since its symptoms may include severe eye pain, headache, nausea, and blurred vision.

Who Is At Greatest Risk for Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is usually seen in older adults over the age of 40, though anyone can be diagnosed, including infants. If you’re over the age of 40 and have a family history of glaucoma or are at risk for other eye diseases, you may need to visit the eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam for the benefit of early detection and treatment before the condition progresses.

How Has Glaucoma Been Traditionally Treated and Managed?

Unfortunately, there’s no cure or known treatment for preventing glaucoma and the significant vision loss it may produce. However, early diagnosis allows for treatments that can significantly reduce vision damage. Open-angle glaucoma treatment requires lowering the eye’s pressure by increasing the drainage of fluid or decreasing the production of that fluid. Treatments consist of antiglaucoma medications, eye drops, laser surgery, and trabeculoplasty.

The Glaukos iStent® Implantation Represents State-of-the-Art Treatment

The Glaukos iStent® Implantation is a second generation model of Glaukos’s first Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery device. It is inserted through a small corneal incision made during cataract surgery and is designed to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP) by restoring the natural physiological outflow of the aqueous humor. The inject is designed to use two stents into separate trabecular locations through a single corneal entry point for further IOP reduction and procedural ease.
