There are certain times of year that are just better than others when it comes to accomplishing things on your to-do list. Spring and summer are probably when you really start thinking about getting back in shape, for example. And it turns out winter might actually the best time to get LASIK. Now, to be clear, there is no wrong time to get LASIK, it’s just that winter happens to be the best time. Here’s why.
There are plenty of reasons you might want to consider getting LASIK in the winter. For one thing, you may find yourself cooped up a bit more, and less active than you usually are when the weather is nice. There are plenty of great winter sports to try out, but most of us aren’t going skiing every day. So if your go-to winter activity is curling up under a blanket, than it may be the perfect time to get LASIK.
LASIK recovery times can vary for individuals, but with all the holiday time off that you may have during the winter, it might be a good idea to schedule LASIK surgery so that you have a few days of downtime before returning to work. After all, if you were planning on staying in anyway, you’ll have the added benefit of returning to work with your great new eyesight.
And having excellent new eyesight might just be on your New Year’s resolutions list. Plenty of people get LASIK in the winter because the timing makes sense for them. “New Year, New Me” is a phrase we hear all the time in January, so it’s understandable that many people would want their laser eye surgery performed in the winter. A fresh start is on just about everyone’s New Year’s list, and getting wonderful new eyesight is about as “New Me” as it gets.
But if you do decide to get LASIK in the winter, keep in mind that your activities may be limited for a few weeks thereafter. For a lot of people, that’s no problem in the winter–they’re sitting in front of the fire with a good book. But for many others, including hockey and basketball players, those limits may be something to consider.
So remember, you shouldn’t be participating in contact sports for a minimum of four weeks without eye protection after getting LASIK. You also shouldn’t go swimming or use a hot tub or whirlpool for a minimum of three weeks after surgery. Again, depending on where you live, this may be much easier for you to do in the winter. In the summer, a beach vacation or a trip to the lake will be much less fun if you can’t get in the water.
