Biography

John Wittpenn, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in anterior segment disease. He has vast experience in refractive, corneal and cataract surgery. Dr. Wittpenn graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in biophysics. He received his medical degree from the John Hopkins School of Medicine. After completing his ophthalmic residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Wittpenn served as a corneal clinical research fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was appointed director of ophthalmic residency training at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles County Medical Center. In 1988, Dr. Wittpenn joined the faculty at the State University of New York at Stony Brook as director of cornea, cataract and anterior segment surgery. He currently remains a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and is active in their ophthalmic residency-training program.

Dr. Wittpenn remains involved in clinical research and holds three patents for ophthalmic products licensed worldwide. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on advancements in his field.

  • A family member was a student in Stony Brook Med School when I finally accepted that I needed a cataract operation; he used his knowledge and connections to find the physician with the best reputation to operate on me. Dr. Wittpenn is stern and his manner can be off-putting but he is the doctor other doctors turn to for the care of their eyes. Due to corneal scaring and my being very near-sighted, the removal of my right lens was not easy and required Dr. Wittpenn to use a scalpel rather than the laser procedure. All went well due to his expertise. When it is time for my other eye’s lens to be replaced, I will have full confidence in allowing Dr. Wittpenn to operate in whatever modality he recommends. I trust him with my sight.

At first seemed all too business but after a handshake and small chat he was a lot better. Dr. Wittpenn listened to my problems and ordered some tests.   • This was my initial visit and i reveived a very thorough exam from Dr. Wittpen and his staff. A detailed discussion was held regarding my need for cataract surgery, why I would likely need it for both eyes, the type of lenses available and their costs and the different procedures provided (standard or laser assisted). Dr. Wittpen took his time and answered my questions. The only negative was that the laser assisted option was available in Westbury and not in Suffolk.

  • I was referred by my optometrist to Dr. Wittpenn for a consultation regarding a possible corneal graft to my right eye, the left eye having been grafted some 20 years ago. I had been previously told that my right eye vision would not be correctable without the graft . After reviewing my medical charts and examining my eye, Dr Wittpenn convinced me that he could most likely attain a very good result in my right eye by removing the cataract and leaving my cornea intact .This was a much simpler and less complicated procedure. And he was right!!!
